COLORFUL EMBROIDERED FABRIC FROM ASIAN HILL TRIBES

These colorful rolls of embroidered fabric are sourced from hill tribe communities in Southeast Asia. The fabric features a stamped indigo batik design, which is then uplifted with some embroidered colors, namely hot pink and bright orange. These colors are often used by the Flower Hmong tribe, who are known for their colorful and bright embroidery and clothing designs.

The indigo batik patterning can vary slightly between rolls, as you can see in the product images. Each roll is approximately 5 yards in length, with a width of 13–14 inches.

WHAT ARE HILL TRIBES? WHO CREATED THIS FABRIC?

Hill tribe communities can be found throughout Asia and even further afield, but we’ll focus on Thailand, where Lanna Passa is based. Here, we have various hill tribe groups, each of which has their own cultural identity, customs, and even language. These groups include the Lisu, Karen, Akha, and Hmong, amongst others.

Each hill tribe is known for and identifiable by their unique crafts and clothing. The Karen long-neck tribe is widely known for their tradition of wearing brass coils around their necks, elongating them over time. (In reality, the neck is not actually lengthened; the heavy brass coils push down the shoulders and rib cages.) The Palaung are known for their bright red clothing and silver hoops worn around the body, considered to be a form of protection. The Hmong hill tribe, who are the second largest hill tribe group in Thailand after the Akha, are known for their colorful embroidery, hemp textiles, and traditional indigo batik techniques. The Hmong are the creators of this very fabric.

You can find more examples of ethnic Hmong textiles in our main fabric and textiles section, including rolls of raw hemp and vintage indigo hemp fabric.

CARING FOR TRADITIONAL HILL TRIBE TEXTILES

Do ethnic textiles need special care? Since hill tribe textiles are created using traditional methods and using natural dyes, such as those from the indigo plant, a little thoughtful care is needed. Nothing too crazy, just some common-sense stuff, really. Try to avoid machine washing if possible; giving them a soak and scrub by hand is enough. Try to avoid harsh chemicals and soaps, too.

Aside from that, you can treat them like any other fabric. When it comes to stitching, cutting, folding, storing fabric, etc., nothing out of the ordinary is required.
