This beautiful throw cushion features a rare textile made up of thick strands of hemp.

Individual hemp strands have been plant-dyed a variety of indigo shades and hues. Hand-woven, these threads intertwine to create a unique textured plaid textile.

The front of the cushion showcases this intricate plaid weave, while the reverse features a locally woven cotton fabric.

AN INDIGO BLUE PLAID CUSHION FEATURING WOVEN HEMP

This small plaid accent cushion features a raw hemp textile with various shades of indigo. The hemp has been dyed using traditional hill tribe methods, notably using leaves from the indigo plant.

If you take a close look at the cushion, you will see individual hemp strands that make up the weave in detail. Some of the strands are thicker than others. Some are dark, some are light, some are blue, and some are white. You really get a feel for how much of an organic cushion this is when up close.

The reverse fabric is a dark blue cotton with a softly textured feel. We’ve completed the look with a hidden zipper enclosure.

Kapok is a natural cushion filling material that is actually sourced from seed pods found in a tropical tree – ‘Ceiba pentandra’. It’s also known as Java cotton, silk cotton, and a few other names. All of which sound like how it feels: soft, silky, luxurious, and organic.

Kapok has been used throughout history, from native Amazonian tribes harvesting the fiber to wrap around their blowgun darts to filling for life jackets. Nowadays its most common use is as an alternative to down as a filling for pillows, upholstery, and even stuffed toys.
