Crafted from pure indigo plant dyed cotton fabric from the Hmong hill tribe of Northern Thailand, these gorgeous throw pillows make a stunning addition to any room.

A beautiful indigo shade with a light fade and patchy dyed look, with the same indigo textile on front and back. A great example of traditional hill tribe textiles and indigo dying tradition, making for truly unique home decor.

The sheets of Hmong cotton used have been handspun using traditional methods and then dipped into a vat of natural indigo plant dye, giving them a deep indigo shade. Each sheet, and thus each pillow cover, may be slightly different as each is handmade and hand-dipped into vats of indigo dye, leading to a variety of shades of indigo depending on a variety of factors including the indigo plant dye mixture, drying process etc. More information on the indigo plant dying process can be found in our journal here.

A matching color fully lined interior and invisible zip enclosure elegantly finish the cushion, allowing for comfortable access for filling and cleaning.

Available in various sizes, each with an insert filled with organic kapok, or as cover-only options, allowing you to fill with the material of your choice.

The handmade nature of Hmong textiles means that they may have imperfections from the natural process of weaving, batik application and dying, often further adding to their character and uniqueness.

FABRIC & INSERT CARE

Washing the cushion cover

Caring for your cushion cover is simple – remove the insert before washing, wash separately in warm water, ideally by hand, and shade dry.

The kapok insert can be washed in a machine or by hand as regular cotton, although we advise removal of the kapok filling beforehand.

It is possible to wash the insert with the kapok filling inside, although kapok takes a notoriously long time to dry due to it’s density!

Caring for the kapok

Kapok is a fantastic fill for cushions and needs no special care – just plump up the kapok fiber every now and then to keep your cushion plump, and add or remove kapok as you wish to find your perfect firmness.

FAQ

How is hill tribe indigo plant dye created?

Hill tribes traditionally make indigo dye by fermenting hand picked indigo plant leaves in water, extracting insoluble indigo, and converting it to a water-soluble form through reduction in a large clay vat. Fabric is immersed in this vat before being exposed to air, where it undergoes resulting in the characteristic blue color. This traditional method has been practiced by hill tribes for generations.

Where is the hill tribe fabric sourced?

We source our hill tribe textiles directly from the Hmong in Northern Thailand. Our indigo dyed cotton sheets are made to order, often requiring a lead time of many weeks due to the time intensive process of traditional fabric dyeing.

What is kapok cushion filling?

Kapok is a soft natural fiber extracted from the seed pods of Kapok (Ceiba) tree which is found in Thailand and Indonesia.

Also known as silk cotton or java cotton, it is luxurious to the touch and has all the qualities of down (without the cruelty of feather gathering). The fiber is non toxic, odorless, resistant to rot, as well as being 100% natural and organic.

This kapok is harvested directly here in Thailand and in it's purest form, untreated and unbleached as you can tell by it's yellow color (whereas a cheaper treated kapok is often noticeably whiter in color).
