This indigo hemp lumbar cushion features a vintage textile from the Hmong hill tribe.

The textile has faded over time, resulting in a gorgeous baby blue hue. Hand-applied batik patterning contrasts with the light blue indigo shade.

A unique vintage lumbar cushion, or accent cushion (whichever term you prefer), that has tons of character within its threads.

The texture of the hill tribe fabric is thick, almost like that of jeans. We’ve contrasted that with a softer bamboo fiber fabric used on the back.

As with all of our cushions, we’ve finished it professionally with an invisible zipper enclosure. Finally, you can choose either the cover only or add one of our organic kapok inserts.

AN AUTHENTIC HEMP LUMBAR CUSHION WITH A VINTAGE VIBE

We proudly source authentic textiles from various hill tribe communities throughout Asia. Indigo hemps, such as the one used to create this cushion, are a relatively common find when scouring vintage textile markets. This is due to their once widespread use in hill tribe dresses and skirts. The Hmong hill tribe in particular is well known for their use of indigo hemp and intricate batik patterns.

What makes this hemp lumbar cushion so special is the beautiful weathered fade. The indigo dye hue, once deep and dark, is now light and airy – almost baby blue in color. These light tones, white batik patterns, and a cream-colored reverse make for a fantastic neutral accent cushion.

FILL YOUR CUSHION WITH ORGANIC KAPOK

Every cushion we make is available as just a cushion cover or complete with a kapok insert. What is a kapok insert, I hear you asking? Well, it’s a white cotton insert we’ve stuffed nice and plump with kapok. Right, and what is kapok? Kapok is an organic fiber harvested from seed pods of the Ceiba tree found in tropical regions.

Why is kapok a good cushion-filling material? There are many reasons. For us, the main ones are its organic and natural source, its hypoallergenic properties, and, of course, softness. It’s kind of like down, without the cruelty of plucking feathers. It’s used throughout Asia in bedding, furnishings, and even for stuffing teddy bears. In short, it’s a fantastic, organic, sustainable pillow filling that we’re mad for.
