PLANT DYED INDIGO FABRIC SHEET DETAILS

Handwoven and indigo plant-dyed fabric sheets from the hill tribes of Southeast Asia.

Each indigo fabric sheet measures approximately 170 cm x 85 cm.

The shades of indigo may differ slightly from one sheet to the next, as each is individually dyed and woven.

CARING FOR INDIGO DYED FABRIC SHEETS

Initially, a short soak or hand wash for a minute or so in cold or lukewarm water will release excess dye, and when shade-dried naturally, it will produce a beautiful, rich indigo color.

A little dye loss is to be expected with future washes; salting the water slightly is said to help keep the dye locked in further.

This textile is not suitable for machine washes, especially with added chemicals and heat. Harsh machine washes will result in heavy dye loss and leave you with an off-gray shade—you don’t want that!

HOW THESE COTTON SHEETS ARE DYED

We’ve actually written some short articles describing the indigo plant dyeing process in our journal. Feel free to have a read there to delve a little deeper into the process. In short, the dye is produced using leaves from the indigo plant. The leaves are harvested, gathered, and then left to ferment, producing a rich indigo paste. It’s this paste mixed with water in which the fabric is soaked multiple times until the beautiful indigo hues have taken over.

It’s a traditional process, one practiced for thousands of years, and a skill we are proud to help keep alive.

ARE PLANT DYED COTTON SHEETS SUITABLE FOR UPHOLSTERY AND CRAFTING?

Of course! We use these sheets to produce various products, including plain indigo cushions and pillows. They are perfect for all types of craft projects and upholstery, whether you want to make some DIY indigo ottomans, clothing, or simple cushions like ours.

You can give the sheets a quick wash to remove any excess dye before starting your work, and they’ll be fine from then on.
