These sheets of organic Hmong cotton have been handspun using traditional methods and then dipped into a vat of natural indigo plant dye, giving them a gorgeous indigo shade.

Typically it takes around 5 weeks for the cotton to be spun, dyed and then left to dry, depending on the season and abundance of the indigo plant.

Each sheet is unique as each is handmade and hand-dipped into vats of indigo dye, leading to a variety of shades of indigo depending on various factors including the indigo plant dye mixture, drying process etc.

THE FINE DETAILS

Hand woven and indigo plant dyed fabric sheets from the hill tribes of S.E Asia

Each sheet is approximately 170cm x 85cm

Shades may differ slightly between sheets as each is individually dyed and woven

CRAFT & CARE

Initially a short soak/hand wash for a minute or so in cold/lukewarm water will release excess dye and when shade dried naturally will produce a beautiful rich indigo color.

A little dye loss is to be expected with future washes – salting the water slightly is said to help keep the dye locked in further.

This textile is not suitable for machine washes, especially with added chemicals and heat – harsh machine washes will result in heavy dye loss and leave you with an off grey shade.

The Hmong are one of many hill tribes including the Lisu and Akha, that are found throughout the border regions of SE Asia. Using traditional methods passed down generations they create their bright embroidery, deep indigo dyed clothing and rich textiles that are steeped in meaning and tradition.

INDIGO PLANT DYE

Indigo dye has been used for thousands of years by civilizations all over the world to dye textiles. As much as 1 tonne of leaves is needed to produce just 2kg of dye. Natural indigo is also a sustainable dye; after the pigment has been extracted the plant residue can be composted and used as a fertilizer and the water reused to irrigate crops.
